Fishy Number Line 1-10 number recognition mat develops gross motor skills and physically reinforces numbers from 0-10.
Kindergarten
Warm Up: 3-5 minutes
Take turns walking along the number line saying the numbers as you touch them. Try to help the students to say the number when their feet touch the number and not before. This is a one-to-one correspondence.
Walk forwards counting by 1s
Walk backward counting by 1s
Tell them to hop over the number 6 as they walk forward. Change the number e.g., 8.
Bag or bucket with cubes (fish food)
One student puts their hand in the bucket and pulls out fish food (cubes).
They count the cubes (e.g., 1,2,3 ) and then find the corresponding number on the Fishy Number Line. Next, they give each fish some food (one cube for each fish). Have the student count the numbers out loud when they feed the fish.
Repeat so that every student has a turn.
Note: If a student has a number that is already taken, remove the previous cubes.
Detective! Materials needed:One bean bag or object to cover a number on the Fishy Number Line
One magnifying glass for the detective (optional).
To begin, hide one number under a bean bag.
Choose a student detective to begin and hand them the magnifying glass.
The student walks up the Fishy Number Line to determine the missing number. Once they figure out the number, have them count the fish in the square to double check their answer before removing the bean bag. Their reward is to hide the next number.
Repeat so that each student has a turn.
